Compass Coffee is an American coffee roaster based in Washington, D.C. It was founded in 2014 and operates in Washington, D.C. and Virginia.
OBJECTIVE
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Compass Coffee, a local coffee roaster and existing D&A client, wanted to adjust their regional expansion strategy. They came to Dochter & Alexander with a question: how do we follow our customers from Downtown DC to other locations in the city and the suburbs?
STRATEGY
Instead of executing individual, one-off deals, Dochter & Alexander worked with Compass Coffee to develop a detailed, thorough strategy for expanding. We came up with a two-pronged approach: expanding to new locations, including drive-through focused shops, in the suburbs while continuing to identify promising locations in DC. This was execution rooted in strategy: we did a lot of work to build a sound strategy before we even started to talk about individual deals.
RESULTS
With Dochter & Alexander's help, Compass Coffee opened their first drive-through location in Arlington, Virginia, and has opened locations in DC in existing, built-out, second-generation coffeeshops. Dochter & Alexander was able to put together creative deal structures to secure maximum value for our client.
